This elegant little bronze horse was originally sculpted by famed equestrian sculptor Gaston d'Illiers (1876-1952) in 1890. d'Illiers was almost exclusively a sculptor of horses, and his work is represented in numerous museums and important private collections. This sculpture was brought to Andevan Bronzeworks for casting by a well-known jockey who called it the finest horse bronze he had ever seen.
Avant la Course was cast of pure bronze n our own California art foundry. It features wonderful detail and a deep, rich patina finish applied under very high heat so that it permanently fuses into the bronze itself. The sculpture is mounted onto a marble base, stands 8.5" high by 9.5" wide, and is signed "G d'Illiers" and "Avant la Course" in the bronze. You simply cannot find a finer equestrian bronze than this one.
