The Council of War
is the crowning achievement of famed American Civil War-era sculptor John Rogers. This sculpture depicts President Abraham Lincoln, General Ulysses S. Grant and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton reviewing Grant's plans of operation for the Army of the Potomac. Rogers captures Stanton wiping his spectacles as Lincoln deeply contemplates the mapped plan and Grant looks on. Please be sure to click on the "View More Images" link above to see additional views of this sculpture.
Rogers created three versions of this bronze sculpture. This version -- known as Type B -- was the most popular and sold for the highest amount when first cast in 1873. Today, it is widely prized as the sculpture best depicting this moment in history.
The Council of War
is mounted onto a black marble base, stands a full 24" high and weighs 133 lbs. It is available in a limited edition of just 100 castings. Each piece is individually numbered in the bronze.
